Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today is the feast of the Annunciation. The angel Gabriel comes to Mary betrothed to Joseph and tells her that she is to bear a son and he is to be named Jesus. Mary is troubled by the angel’s words and says, “how can this be “and Gabriel says to her “Do not be afraid” for “nothing will be impossible for God.” Mary says;  “Let it be done to me according to your word”. This phrase is often described as Mary’s “fiat” from the Latin which means ‘let it be done’. Mary says “I am the handmaid of the Lord” – literally I am the servant of the Lord and it is at that moment that she becomes the mother of God.

What a great model for us of the faith that we are called to have; to believe that when God promises something, we can rely on it.

A prayer by Pope Benedict
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
you have given the world its true light,
Jesus, your Son – the Son of God.
You abandoned yourself completely
to God’s call and this became a wellspring
of the goodness which flows forth from him.
Show us Jesus.  Lead us to him.
Teach us to know and love him,
so that we too can become capable of true love
and be fountains of living water in the midst of a thirsting world.

God bless,
Fr. Tony
