Sept. 7/8  No class – Labor Day

Sept. 14/15  Session 5: This session covers the 5 Old Testament covenants and how  the early Church Fathers understood their meaning in light of the establishment of the New Covenant in Christ.

Sept. 21/21  Session 6:  This is a continuation of Session 5 about the discussion of the covenants that God made with His people in the Old Testament.  The New Covenant of Christ is understood as the “Real Presence” in the Eucharist.

Sept. 28/29  Session 7:  This week we explore why Christ ordained priests/Apostles to spread the Word of God.  He founded a Church to gather people together and bring them into His family.

Oct. 5/6  Session 8:  We will look at how difficult it was for the Fathers to maintain unity in their teachings, and how the authority that Christ gave to Peter was passed on through the Apostles to the subsequent Church leaders.

Oct. 12/13  Session 9:  This session explores the mysteries (“mystagogy”) contained in the sacraments of the Church.  We will especially talk about the sacrifice of Christ and how that is the ultimate expression of His love for us.

Oct. 19/20  Session 10:  This week we hear more about some of the Church Fathers, especially St. John Chrysostom and St. Augustine of Hippo.  Who exactly were they, and why are they quoted so often?

Oct. 26/27  Session 11: This session examines the martyrdom of some of the Fathers, and how their sacrifices for the faith unite them with the sufferings and sacrifice of Christ.  They use Eucharistic terms to explain this mystery.

Nov. 2/3  Session 12: This final session ties it all together – how these early Church Fathers lived their faith, and how they are examples for us so that our sufferings can bring us closer to Christ. This happens every time we celebrate the Mass and offer ourselves back to God.
