Dear Parents,

Don’t forget that tomorrow, March 6, is Ash Wednesday.  I invite you and your middle schoolers to join us for mass tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. in the church. Our regular Edge session will be replaced by this mass and we will not meet afterward.

As we begin the season of Lent, I encourage you and your child to talk about the significance of this liturgical season, the practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving and how we will live those out. I’ll be sending you resources to help you and your children learn, grow, and pray together.

I encourage you to begin by learning about the importance of Ash Wednesday and why we fast through the vidoes below. Remember that we are asked to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Watch these with your child for more details, and then discuss the following:

  • Did you learn anything new about Ash Wednesday?
  • What does fasting on Ash Wednesday look like? Do you have a plan for how to do this at school? (No snacks, no meat, one meal and two smaller meals which don’t equal the size of the larger meal, etc.)
  • What can we as a family give up for Lent? (going out to eat, TV, phones at the dinner table, etc.)
  • How do you think giving up something you love (fasting) can help you grow closer to God?
  • How can we as a family pray more together? (pray before meals, say the rosary together every night, etc)
  • How can our family give alms this Lent? (donate to charity, volunteer at the food shelf, etc.)

Be assured of prayers for your families as we begin the journey of Lent together.
