Centennial Year

June of 2009

Our Lady of The Lake Catholic Church
1909-2009

“A Church for All Decades "
"You bring me out here and no church" lamented a young Lake Minnetonka area bride in 1908.  "The church will follow" replied her husband-- and it did.  In May of 1909 Archbishop John Ireland - out on a horse and buggy ride with Father Francis Jager of St. Boniface in St. Bonifacius -  spotted an old wooden school along what is now County Rd. 110.  The Archbishop exclaimed "This is the place for a church" and handed Father Jager $100 to apply to the purchase price.

A little more than a month later the building was purchased on contract for $2,000 and on Sunday, June 13, 1909, Father Jager offered the first Mass in what was to become the parish of Our Lady of the Lake. Fourteen adults and children, along with the choir from St. Boniface Church, celebrated this first Mass.

With the seed of just $100 the story of Our Lady of the Lake began.  In 2009 the parishioners will celebrate the 100th anniversary of OUR LADY OF THE LAKE CHURCH.  As part of this celebration, a Centennial book will be published featuring the history of our church, its founding families, it's school, the many people who helped build the parish community as it exists today including priests and nuns who served the parish and MUCH more.  This history book will be available in time for the Celebration Mass that will open the Centennial year on October 26, 2008.  This 8 by 10 inch book with  approximately 200 pages will have a foil-stamped cover and photographs that span the years of 1909 to 2009. This keepsake - rich in history and tradition - has been lovingly written by parishioners and includes personal memories shared by many present and former members of the parish.
